Queensland Yacht Charters: Discovering Whitsunday Wildlife

There are so many amazing benefits and unique experiences to be had when chartering your own private yacht in the Whitsundays. Take a look through some of our other popular blog posts here on Queensland Yacht Charters, and you’ll begin to understand why. A yacht charter provides you with the freedom to tailor-make your own personal holiday. With total control of your adventure, you can head off into the Whitsundays and create your dream holiday. Do the things you want, when you want. Whether you’re keen for an exciting few weeks of action-packed exploration, or a shorter, relaxed, romantic getaway, a yacht charter is the ideal choice for your next holiday.

One element of your Whitsundays journey, without a doubt, will be observing and appreciating some of the beautiful natural wildlife to be found in and around the islands. In between snorkeling, diving, bushwalking, and fishing, you are sure to catch sight of some of the spectacular Whitsunday Wildlife. So what kinds of creatures are you likely to see?

Tropical Fish

As you swim and fish right off the deck of your chartered yacht, you will be certain to spot countless fish darting around in the water. A snorkeling exploration of one of the Whitsundays’ many reefs will bring you face to face with some of the most striking, colourful fish you’ve ever seen. Many fishermen travel to the Whitsundays because the know it is prime fishing territory. Some delicious fish can be caught in these waters, making for a splendid meal from the privacy of your yacht charter. Popular fish you may want to try include coral trout, giant trevally, and Spanish mackerel. But in the Whitsundays, we’re all about wildlife! There are many protected species of fish who inhabit these waters, and while it is prohibited to fish these species, you can enjoy their rare beauty.

Other Ocean Creatures

If you’re lucky enough, you might spot a beautiful and harmless manta ray while swimming or snorkelling in the Whitsundays. These majestic creatures are frequently seen gliding around reefs. Many visitors to Australia are concerned with the possibility of encountering sharks in the water. While sharks do inhabit these oceans and reefs, in the event that you do spot one, remember that they are more scared of YOU than you are of them, and they will probably swim away very quickly.

On Land in the Whitsundays

If you anchor your chartered yacht in one of the Whitsundays’ countless bays, you can head on land and discover some non-sea wildlife. There are birds aplenty on these islands, from the tiny rainbow lorikeets bursting with colour, to the fluffy, laughing kookaburra and the impressive white-bellied sea eagle. Keep your eyes peeled to catch sight of these interesting bird species, both when bushwalking and when sailing around on your yacht. If you’re fishing, keep a look out for the white-bellied sea eagle, who may try and snatch your bait!

A Close Encounter

If you’re not satisfied by the wildlife you’ve experienced on your yacht charter, you may want to consider signing up for a more up close and personal experience. For some heart-pounding excitement you can take a crocodile tour on the Proserpine River. Or, for more gentle wildlife encounters, head to the Hamilton Island Wildlife Park to cuddle a koala. Whatever you choose, when chartering a yacht in the glorious Whitsundays, the wildlife opportunities are endless.
