The Whitsundays are an excellent destination for fishing, and it is easy to see why visitors come from the world over to fish in these pristine islands. The Whitsundays are a chain of many, many islands, however, so it may be difficult to locate that prime fishing spot without tips from the locals. Here we have compiled a list of some of the best fishing spots in and around the Whitsundays. Whitsunday fishing can be done in a variety of areas around the islands. The rocky edges of many islands are a great place for sport fishing. Especially good spots to catch fish such as the common Giant Trevally are Nara Inlet, Shute Harbour, the rocky sides located near Daydream Island resort, Haselwood Island’s north side , and Hook Passage.

Reefs are a very popular area for fishing in the Whitsundays. In your chartered yacht, you can moor your vessel close by the reefs for some excellent catches. There are shallow reefs around many islands that offer plenty of fish ripe for the catching. One recommended spot is the reef off the south western tip of South Molle. Here you can find many mackerel. Around the southern end of Whitsunday Island, you can catch many Sweetlip, Cod, Spangled Emperor, and Coral Trout. Other sought-after fishing spots are Bird Island, Double Cone Islands, the northeastern edge of Hook Island and Apostle Bay’s fringing reefs. When reef fishing, exercise extra caution when mooring your vessel, as you want to be careful not to damage these beautiful and fragile reefs.

Estuaries are a third option for fishing spots in the Whitsundays. The most popular is the Proserpine River. This is the best place to find Threadfin Salmon, also known as “Kingies.” Other fish in this area include Barramundi, Queenfish, Grunter, and Flathead.

Shute Jetty and Shute Harbour are also a couple of good spots that offer a wide variety of fish, and plenty of it. Sailing around in your chartered yacht, you will have the islands at your disposal, and will be able to find the hottest fishing spots. The headlands or the passages between the islands are excellent places to try for some prime fishing.
